Lurtz is a character which was created especially for the movie and does not appear in Tolkien's original books. He is one of Saruman's first Uruk-hai, a race of orcs specifically bred to be incredible warriors and the first to be resilient to the sun. Lurtz is the leader of the group of Uruk-hai sent to capture the Ring-bearer and pierces Boromir with four arrows. Lurtz is decapitated by Aragorn before he gets a chance to execute Boromir. Although the wounds he has inflicted on Boromir prove fatal.

Saruman came to Middle Earth as the Chief of the Istari, and was the head of the White Council. But for many years, Saruman concealed his secret desires for power and glory. He desired to have the One Ring. A good wizard gone bad, Saruman has remade himself as an avid breeder of orcs, a cohort of the evil Sauron and a world-dominating tyrant in the making. Known for his long white locks, beetle brows and a wizard staff, he pays the price for forgetting about the ents!

Having appeared in nearly 300 films and television productions, Lee has the distinction of being listed in The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats as the international star with the most screen credits. Numbered among those credits are the sinister roles which Lee created for Hammer, the British production company which in the 1950s revived the public's fascination with 'horror movies. In playing both Frankenstein's 'Creature' and Dracula, Lee became the successor to 30s movie legends Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. He is also famous for being James Bond's title-opponent in The Man with the Golden Gun and Count Dooku /Darth Tyranus in Star Wars: Episode II.
